Overview
In the early 1900’s the area that is now the Marine Expedition Center, once served as a harbor for the old Panama City.
During World War II there was a military base stationed there to protect the Panama Canal. In 1960 the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute founded the Marine Expedition Center. The main purpose was to encourage conservation of marine life and preserve the ecosystems of both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Panama.
